74 teams of 50 associations of football took share at the season 2005-2006 of the Ligue of the Champions. The competition began the July 12th 2005 by the first preliminary round and finished the May 17th 2006 by the finale with the Stade de France with Paris between FC Barcelona and Arsenal. The FC Barcelona carried it 2 to 1.

First preliminary round

FC Liverpool, holding of the title, as well as the champions of the 23 federations classified between the 27e and the 50e row of the classification UEFA (the Liechtenstein, 43e, not having a national championship) play in matches return ticket. The 12 winners are qualified for the preliminary second round.

The 12 winners of the preceding turn, the champions of the 10 federations classified between 17th and the 26e row of the classification UEFA as well as the vice-champions of the 6 federations classified between 10th and the 15th rank play in matches return ticket. The 14 winners are qualified for the third preliminary round.

Third preliminary round

The 14 winners of the preceding turn, the champions of the 6 federations classified between 11th and the 16th rank of the classification UEFA, the vice-champions of the 3 federations classified between 7th and the 9th rank, the third of the 6 federations classified between 1st and the 6th rank as well as the fourth of the 3 federations classified between 1st and the 3rd rank play in matches return ticket. The 16 winners are qualified for the phase of groups whereas the 16 losers play the first tower of the UEFA Cup.

The 16 winners of the preceding turn, the champions of the 10 federations classified between 1st and the 10th rank of the classification UEFA as well as the vice-champions of the 6 federations classified between 1st and the 6th rank are divided into eight groups of four teams. Each team plays twice against the three other teams of the group. The two first of each group are qualified for the eighth of finale whereas the third play the third tower of the UEFA Cup.

In the event of equality in a group at the end of the six matches, the following criteria are used to decide between the teams:

  1. direct Confrontations
  2. Goals marked in direct confrontations
  3. Goals marked outside in direct confrontations
  4. total Difference in goals
  5. Goals marked in all the matches
  6. Coefficient UEFA
