Leader of the Opposition to the Senate (Canada)

With the Canada, the Leader of the Opposition to the Senate (English: Leader off the Official Opposition in the Senate ) is the leader of the most important party to the Sénat which is not with the government. Since it is the House of Commons of Canada which determines which party holds the capacity, the numerical importance of the caucus of the parties to the Senate does not determine in any way the choice of the party formamt the side of the government to the Senate and that filing the opposition. Thus, the Leader of the Opposition to the Senate can in makes direct more senators than the Leader of the government to the Senate. Of 1993 with 2003 the Leader of the Opposition to the Senate was a progressist-conservative in spite of the fact that the progressist-conservatives were not the Official opposition with the House of Commons, since the parties forming the Official opposition during this period (Québécois Bloc, Parti reformist, Canadian Alliance) did not have a representation with the Senate.

The counterpart of the Leader of the Opposition to the Senate with the Lower House is the Chef of the Official opposition. Since this person is usually the chief of the party also, it or it names its counterpart with the Senate, except when the Official opposition in Room is not the same one as the Official opposition with the Senate; such was the case of 1993 with 2003 when the chief of the Party progressist-conservative of Canada to the House of Commons chose the Leader of the Opposition to the Senate.

The current Leader of the Opposition to the Senate is Céline Hervieux-Payette.
