The Lead of the Cantal , located in the Department of the Cantal, is more the high summit of the solid mass of the Monts of the Cantal and culminates to 1.855 Mr. It is almost as high as the culminating point of the Massif Central the Puy de Sancy which measures 1.885 Mr. With its neighbors Peyre Arse, the Puy Mary, the puy Griou, the puy Violent one,… it is the vestige of immense a Volcan moreover 60 km in diameter and more than 3.000 m height dating from the tertiary era which was eroded by the Glacier S. The origin of its name would come of Latin pomum i.e. apple, pommel, sprouting.

One can reach the top in two ways:

  • In Cable car (10 minutes), from the station Super Lioran + 10 minutes of walk on a path in very easy staircase
  • with foot from the station Super Lioran in one hour and half of walk.

One discovers there, in clear weather, a splendid panorama with:

  • in north: the solid mass of the Cézallier and the Monts Gild with in background the Chaîne of Puys and Puy de Dôme
  • in the North-East the Monts of Drill
  • in the east the mounts of the Margeride
  • in south-east, in background, the Mont Aigoual distant of more than 100 km.
  • in the west with of the valley of the Cère, other volcanos of the solid mass: the Puy Griou (1 690 m), the puy of Peyre-Arse, the Puy Mary (1 787 m), the puy Violent one (1 592 m), the Puy Chavaroche (1 739 m)…

On its slopes feed of the herds of Vache S of race Salers, with the russet-red dress and the large horns “in handlebar of bicycle”.

The yellow Gentian or yellow gentian pushes there, its root which can reach 1,50 m will be used to make the Salers.

Administratively, the top is at the border between the communes of Saint-Jacques-of-Blats the with the west and Albepierre-Bredons in the east. Hundred meters in the south of the top is the triple point with the commune of Brezons. It is also a triple point of meeting of the basins large slopes of three French rivers:

  • side Saint-Jacques-of-Blats, in the North-West, it is the basin-slope of the Cère which moves towards the the Dordogne;
  • Brezons side, in the south, it is the basin-slope of the Brezons which moves towards the the Garonne;
  • Albepierre-Bredons side, in the North-East, it is the basin-slope of the Alagnon which moves towards the the Loire.
