Le Monde of silence

Le Monde of silence is a documentary film, one duration of 1  H 26  min of 1955, corealized by Jacques-Yves Cousteau and Louis Malle, which was then young a 23 year old realizer.

Le Monde of silence watch first images colors of the underwater world. It starts with a voice-off reciting the following text:

“With fifty meters of surface, of the men makes a film. Provided with compressed-air aqualungs, they are delivered gravity. They evolve/move freely. ”

Moving aboard ship Calypso , the team of plungers turns during hundreds of hours in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean. The 25 kilometers of film will be reduced to 2  500 meters with the assembly of film. One of the heroes of film will be Jojo the Mérou .

Le Monde of silence obtained the Palme of gold 1956 of the Cannes festival. Until 2004 - date on which the film Fahrenheit 9/11 of Michael Moore received the same distinction - it remained the only documentary film to have obtained this supreme reward. It also received the Prix Méliès in 1956.

To note in this film, some scenes particularly criticables with the eyes of the public of the 21e century: massacre Requin S, fishing with the dynamite and another lacerations of Cachalot S… But it is necessary to replace all this in the context of discovered marine universe by the general public and well before the debates on the ecology and the protection of the marine species.
