Le Figaro Magazine
The Figaro Magazine is a supplement Hebdomadaire daily newspaper Le Figaro which appears each Saturday and tackles at the same time political and cultural subjects.
Launched for the first time in October 1978, the Figaro Magazine is the answer of the Groupe Harrowing, then editor of the Figaro , with the absence of magazine of right information clearly located at .
The idea goes back to a few years earlier when Robert Harrowing, owner of the Figaro , wishes to accompany his daily newspaper by a cultural supplement which would bear the name of Figaro Sunday . The project is entrusted to the writer Louis Pauwels, then near to Alain de Benoist, founder of the current of thought which will be baptized “Nouvelle right-hand side” by Nouvel Observateur in 1979. The editor association of the Figaro Sunday will be the journalist Patrice de Plunkett, still near to same running at that time.
In spring 1978, Harrowing Robert decides to transform this supplement into true magazine. The team grows rich then by new collaborators like Maurice Beaudoin (right-hand man of Harrowing, editor association of the heading tourism and art of living), Jean d' Ormesson, Michel Dunois (ex-writer as a chief with the Dawn ), Alain Griotteray, François Nourissier, Philippe Bouvard, Jean-Claude Valla (of 1978 to 1980), Henri-Christian Giraud, Christine Clerc, Veronique Grousset, Jean-Edern Hallier, Veronique Prat, etc the political service will be entrusted later to Alain Berger, near to the RPR. In 1980, Robert Harrowing évince or put at the variation the representatives Nouvelle right-hand side, which fought then for the renewal of the right-wing ideas and the assertion of values opposed to those of the left Intelligentsia of . The Figaro Magazine wants to then seem the reflection of all the political line tendencies, but with a modern glance and sometimes shifted. In spite of the first cover devoted to Valery Giscard d'Estaing, the magazine is defended to privilege a party or a political personality. He asserts the freedom of criticism, supports sometimes ideas which go to counter-current of the traditional line opinions, and defends the idea that art and the culture should not be treated by the political or ideological prism of a-priori.
From 1988, the Figaro Magazine is directed more towards the subjects of company, art of living, the voyages and the leisures. In 1997, Patrice de Plunkett is replaced with the head of the drafting by Bernard Lecomte, who itself will be replaced by others. Franz-Olivier Giesbert will direct the magazine some time, before being évincé by Yves de Chaisemartin (become chairman of the Socpresse which publishes Le Figaro ) and leaving to take the direction of the Point . After which Chaisemartin itself will be évincé by Serge Dassault, when this one takes again Socpresse. Since September 2007, Etienne Mougeotte took the direction of the drafting of the Figaro Magazine , to replace Michel Schifres.
At the same time as he knows new executive teams, the Figaro Magazine renews his formula regularly. The last, launched in 2005, aims “clarifying the reading of the newspaper and at returning its place to the image”, which was one of the strong points of the magazine at its time of great diffusion. In 2006, its pulling (announced) rose with 600.000 specimens. Its real paying diffusion is established with the low water level of that of the daily Figaro .
