Lazy Kings
The name of “ lazy kings ” was allotted afterwards to the frank kings Mérovingiens from 639, end of the reign of Dagobert Ier.
This end of dynasty, marked by very short reigns, very young sovereigns often - consequences of many quarrels of succession - brought one period of political instability where the capacity was diverted by the aristocracy, and in particular by the mayors of Palate , of which in particular Charles Martel and Pépin the Brief, which will end up founding its own dynasty, that of the Carolingien S, with the birth of his/her Charles son (future Charlemagne).
The brilliance and fast revival of the French kingdom which Charlemagne will bring made appear, by contrast, the end of reign of the mérovingiens like one turbid period of the French history.
One showed them to the people in the Champs of May, then one made them return in their retirement. The lazy kings begin with Thierry III (673 - 691), which was let control initially by Ébroïn, then by Pépin of Herstal. The others were Clovis III, Childebert III, Dagobert II, Chilpéric II, Thierry IV and Childéric III which was détrôné by the mayor of the palate Pépin the Brief. One also called the Fainéant Louis V, the last of the Carolingian kings in France (986 - 987).
