Lazarists

One calls Lazaristes the brothers and the priests of the Congrégation of the founded Mission in 1625 per saint Vincent of Paul (1581-1660) in a building in Paris, near to the door Saint Victor, called college of the Good-Children.

The Congregation of the Mission is an apostolic company of life dedicated to the evangelization of the poor in the campaigns.

When the head office was transferred in 1632 to the priory Saint-Lazare (old leper-house) to Paris, the priests were usually called lazarists. The company was approved by Urbain VIII in 1633 under the name of Société of the Priests of the Mission. Vincent of Paul added soon to the mission of his company the direction of seminars diocesans, one of the great urgencies of his time. In 1792, they directed 51 great seminars to France. They are also reflected to preach retirements, inaugurated by the Conférences of Tuesday of Vincent saint of Paul in 1633. They left for remote missions (Tunis in 1645, Madagascar in 1648, the Ottoman Empire in 1783). They undertook works of education and charity.

The company counts today approximately 4.150 members, divided into 535 houses throughout the world, in particular in the Eastern European countries; it remained in priority directed towards the evangelization of poorest and the marginal ones.
