The grounds of the commune are sprinkled by the brooks the Layoû (17,2 km) and the Laus (10,5 km), affluents of the Gave d' Oloron.

Toponymy

The toponym Lay is mentioned since 1205 (titles of Bérérenx), and appears in the form Feels-Pee Lay (1412, notaries of Navarrenx).
The toponym Lamidou appears in the forms Lamito (XIe century, according to Pierre de Marca), Laymidoo (1376, military watch of Béarn), Lamidoo (1385, censier of Béarn) and Lamidon (1546, reformation of Béarn).

History

Paul Raymond note that Lay counted a laic abbey, vassal of the Viscount of Béarn.
In 1385 Lay counted 24 fires and Lamidou 8. Both depended on the Bailliage of Navarrenx.
Lay and Lamidou are joined together since April 18th, 1842.
