Laxey

Laxey ( Laksaa in Mannois) is a village located on the coast, in the North-East of the island of Man. With the census of 2001, it counted: 1725 inhabitants: 1768 in 2006. Its name comes from the Vieux norrois Laxa (“river with salmon”).

History

At the beginning of the 19th century, one started to extract there from the Plomb and the Zinc, which gave to the city an industry of great width. In 1854, one built a large wheel, known under the name of Laxey Wheel , which made it possible to pump water for the mine, but gradually, industry declined and périclita completely thirty-five years later, in 1929.

Tourism

Today, Laxey attracts many tourists, thanks to the many parks which it counts, inter alia Laxey Glen Gardens. The city is built around a valley. Several streets are transformed gradually into paths and end up leaving Laxey.

The station of Laxey is the terminus of the line of Snaefell.

The Laxey Wheel

This wheel was called “Isabella Lady”, of the name of the wife of Henry Hope, lieutenant-governor of the island in function at the time of its construction. It is engineer Robert Casement who was the originator. Of a diameter impressing of 22 meters, the wheel has been one of most visited the tourist attractions area for a hundred and fifty years. The government of the island of Man in acquired in 1965 and restored it for the occasion.

Other sites

The park of Laxey (Laxey Glen) . In the Years 1800, the father William Fitzsimmons undertakes on about fifty years the plantation of many species of trees. The park is arranged for the visit of tourists per R. Williamson at the beginning of the 20th century. After the Second world war, the site was sold with the government of the island of Man. Today, seven people are employed to maintain the park.

The falls from the king Orry (nickname of Godred Crovan), with the Minorca locality, is a site regularly visited by the tourists. It is about a monument megalithic quite former to the king mannois.
