Law 3 of football: many players

The article Law 3 of football: many players state the law 3 of football and present various considerations relative to this law. Law 3 refers to the number of players.

With the Football, the laws of football is the name given to the rules of the game of football. They are decided on the level of the International Football Association Board (IFAB); the last version goes back to 2000.

Players

Any match is disputed by two teams made up each of 11 players to the maximum, of which one will be the goalkeeper. No match can take place if one or the other team has less than seven players. In France, no match can take place if one or the other team has less than eight players.

Official competitions

In any match disputed within the framework of official competitions of the FIFA or competitions organized by the Confederations and National associations, it is possible to resort to three substitutes to the maximum. The payment of the competition must specify the number of substitutes - between three at least and seven at the most - who it is possible to indicate as such. In the matches between national teams has, it is possible to have recourse to 6 substitutes at most.

Other matches

At the time of all the other parts, it is possible to have recourse to substitutes provided that:

the two teams get along on the maximum number of the authorized substitutes,
the referee is informed before the beginning of the meeting.

If the referee were not informed or if no agreement occurs before the beginning of the meeting, it will not be possible to align more than three substitutes.

All matches

With each match, the name of the substitutes must be communicated with the referee before the beginning of the meeting. A substitute not declared as such will not be able to take part in the meeting.

Procedure of replacement

The replacement of a player by a substitute must conform to the following procedure:

the referee must be beforehand informed of each replacement considered,
the substitute penetrates on the playing field only after the exit of the player whom it must replace and after being invited there by a sign of the referee,
the substitute penetrates on the playing field only on the level of the line of centers and during a stop of the play,
the procedure of replacement is completed at the time when the substitute penetrates on the playing field,
the substitute becomes player then, and the player who it replaced cease to be a player,
a player who was replaced cannot to take part more in the match,
any substitute is subjected to the authority and the decisions of the referee, that it has to play or not.

Replacement of the goalkeeper

Each player of field can replace the goalkeeper provided that:

the referee is informed beforehand of the replacement considered,

the replacement is carried out during a stop of the play.

Remark : The presence of a goalkeeper is obligatory. If a goalkeeper is seriously wounded, it must be immediately replaced.

Infringements/Sanctions

If a substitute penetrates on the playing field without authorization of the referee:

the play is stopped,
the substitute concerned is informed (yellow paperboard) and must leave the playing field,
the play begins again by a ball with ground at the place where the balloon was at the time of the interruption of the play.

If a player replaces the goalkeeper without the referee not being beforehand informed:

the play continues,
the player concerned is informed (yellow paperboard) as soon as the balloon ceases being concerned.

For any other infringement with this Law:

the player concerned is informed (yellow paperboard).

Resumption of the play

If the play were stopped by the referee to pronounce a warning:

the play begins again by a frankly indirect blow carried out by a player of the opposing team at the place where the balloon at the time of the interruption of the play was.

Eviction of players or substitutes

A player who was expelled before the kickoff of the match can be replaced only by one of the substitutes appointed like such.
Un appointed substitute which was expelled either before or after the kickoff of the match cannot be replaced.
Si a goalkeeper is expelled, a player of ground must take his place and this last will be replaced by another guard (if a replacement is possible, to see procedure of replacement)
