Law 1 of football: the playing field

The article Law 1 of football: the playing field states the law 1 of football and presents various considerations relative to this law. Law 1 refers to the playing field.

With the Football, the laws of football is the name given to the rules of the game of football. They are decided on the level of the International Football Association Board (IFAB); the last version goes back to 2000.

Historical reference marks

  • 1862 . No allusion to the playing field in the rules enacted by Thring.
  • 1863 . First indications concerning the playing field in the payment of Cambridge.
  • 1875 . Under the pressure of Sheffield F, F authorizes the use of a transverse bar on the goals, replacing the ribbon which fixed the height hitherto of it. The dimension of the goals is definitively fixed at 7,32m length for 2,44m height.
  • 1891 . Nets from now on are fixed at the goals.
  • 1901 . Creation of the penalty area.
  • 1912 . The guard can touch the balloon of the hand in his penalty area and not all ground, as it was the case up to that point.
  • 1937 . Ultimate modification of the tracing of the ground with the addition of an arc of circle to 10 yards of the point of penalty.

The two longest lines of demarcation are called touchlines; two shorter lines of goal are named. The playing field is divided into two halves by the line of centers.
