Lavandou

Lavandou is a common Var (the Of the department of Var Riviera) located on the edges of the Mediterranean, vis-a-vis the gold Islands (Port-Cross-country race, the island of Raising and Porquerolles) and with the foot of the Massif of the Moors. The inhabitants of Lavandou are of Lavandouraines and Lavandourains.

The origin of the name Lavandou

The word Lavandou first of all makes think of Lavande. That is included/understood since names Lavande and Lavandou are close. A variety of lavender pushes indeed on the hills of the Moors (lavandula stoechas), but the name of Provence of this lavender is Queirélé , but one must keep in mind well that seventy years ago hardly, one spoke in this small village of Provence only the Provençal, therefore how one could then have made word Queirélé that of lavandou…

What appears surest, is written in the Trésor of Félibrige of Frederic Mistral, the large poet of Provence who obtained the Nobel Prize of literature. One reads on page 195 of the 2nd volume: Lavadou - Lavandou (VAr) synonymous with the word “laundrette” . The Town hall of Lavandou has by besides a table of Charles Ginoux representing the hamlet of Lavandou in 1736 or one sees in the foreground a laundrette where the women of fishermen washed their linen.

Administrative birth of the commune

In the beginning, Lavandou was only one district of the commune of Bormes-the-Mimosas, but in 1909, it became convenient to claim its communal autonomy. Thus, at the end of an administrative long process, the Government separated from the commune of Bormes, a territory ranging between the point of Gouron in the west, the gully of Fontalde with Pramousquier in the east and the river of the Mole in north, is approximately 2.975 hectares.

The Council of State adopted the bill setting up Lavandou in commune by a law, voted on March 27th by the House of Commons, adopted by the Senate on May 20th, and promulgated by the president of the Republic Raymond Poincaré on May 25th, 1913.

Lavandou is thus a rather young commune administratively but extremely old historically.
