Laurentides (administrative area)

See also: Laurentides

Administrative area of the Quebec, on the Bank-North of the St. Lawrence, close to Montreal. It is made up of 8 regional municipalities of county (MRC) and 83 municipalities.

The economy depends enormously on tourism, the populations of Montreal, Laval, Longueuil, on bank of the St. Lawrence, for a long time invaded the area of Laurentides. These thousands of tourists needed a not very distant, relatively wild and very attractive area. Qualities which Laurentides answer very well.

This area of low mountains had been colonized by some farmers towards the end of the nineteenth century. Although the area was not particularly fertile, sudden “a boom” involved thousands of families to come to settle in the “countries of in top”. All was to be made when these men and these women arrived, towards 1880, the forest, completely virgin, was cleared, a multitude of villages were set up, and whoever walks today in Laurentides will notice the small churches of countryside which overhang each village. Almost all date from the end of the XIXe century.

The Laurentides are also a broad assembly line which extends until in Charlevoix and which marks the area particularly.
