Saint Laurent Justinien , (Lorenzo Giustiniani), 1381 - 1455, was the first patriarch of Venice, he was a large reformer and wrote important mystical works.

Life

Born in 1381, Laurent joined at the 19 years age the regular canons of the convent Augustin of Saint-Georges of the island of Alga. He will be the general superior, later on.

Ordered priest in 1406, it is named bishop of Venice by the Pope Eugene IV, this against its will.

All its life, it endeavoured to promote the reform of the Church, while living in a great austerity. He worked without slackening with pastoral, devoted himself with enthusiasm to the spiritual activities, and delegated the administrative tasks.

One owes him of many writings, of which for example:

  • Divinum Incendium amoris
  • De Casto connubio

When Nicolas V moved the Patriarcat with Venice, Laurent was named at this station, that it occupied until his death, on January 8th 1465.

He was canonized on October 16th 1690 by the Pope Alexandre VIII. He is celebrated on September 5th (or on January 8th, according to the sources).
