Laurent II of Médicis

Laurent II of Médicis (1492 - 1519), wire of Pierre II of Médicis, father of Alexandre '' the Moor '' and of Catherine de Médicis… Machiavel dedicated to its famous treaty the Prince to him.

Biography

Its marriage with Madeleine of the Tower of Auvergne (1495 - 1519), cousin of the king François Ier, had a diplomatic goal: the alliance of the Médicis family and the royal family of France against the Holy Germanic Roman Empire.

The painter Raphaël made his portrait for marriage - to see Portrait of Lorenzo de Medici, duke of Urbino - showing the refinement of the Italian Renaissance by returned sumptuous fabrics: gibe, velvet, folded and fur.

Of their union is resulting only one child, Catherine de Médicis (1519 - 1589), queen of France by marriage (1547 - 1559) with the king Henri II, and mother of the kings François II, Charles IX, and of Henri III. She controlled France as a queen-mother and was regent of France of 1560 with 1564.

Laurent II of Médicis is thus the maternal grandfather of three kings de France.
