Laurell Kaye Hamilton , born the February 19th 1963, is an American writer of novels of horror and fantasy. Born in the small town from Heber Springs in the Arkansas, it grew in Sims in the Indiana and currently resides in the county of St Louis in the Missouri.
It is mainly the author of two series of novels: that of Anita Blake, started in 1993, and which to date comprises fourteen volumes including nine published in French, and that of Meredith Gentry, started in 2000, and who to date comprises five volumes including two published in French. One and the other series proceed, at our time, the the United States, in a world where the magic is currency and where the existence of the monsters is known the human ones. The two worlds côtoient and have thus many reports/ratios and exchanges while remaining fundamentally foreign one with the other.
The two series are rather close by their sets of themes in spite to some differences. In the series of Anita Blake, the creatures garous (wolves, rats, panthers etc) and the vampires try to be integrated into the human society and to exert there a work in spite of the climate of mistrust which surrounds them. In that of Meredith Gentry, the elves (called sidhes) of light and the elves dark live separate men of which they flee curiosity in order to preserve the purity of their race dying in the refuge of their last territory.
Sometimes compared with Buffy for their character fighter, the main characters of Laurell K. Hamilton dissociate themselves some however by some darker aspects. The two series bathe indeed in an environment of sensuality and fantastic where the sadomasochistic reports/ratios are the rule of the relations between the characters. This very particular aspect constitutes certainly the great originality of the work of Laurell K. Hamilton.
