Lauhire
The Lauhire (Laouhire) is a small country hinge between Basque Country and Béarn. It is located at the north of the junction of the Saison and the Gave d' Oloron. It includes the communes of Abitain, Arbouet-Sussaute, Autevielle-Saint-Martin-Bideren, Labastide-Villefranche, Bergouey, Ilharre and Osserain.
Its name, of the Basque lau hiri “4 fields”, was explained by its situation of borders between Low-Navarre Soule, , Béarn and Gascogne (at the time of the influence of Dax until in these places, before the fastening of Orthez in Béarn at the 11th century).
But it can as much refer to 4 agricultural domains without other prétention.
The country is quoted in 1256 ( Laufire ) and in XVe century ( Lauphire ) then still under the name of Laufiray in 1538.
Lauhire is the name of a house located on the commune of Arancou.
Lauhire is crossed by the Lauhirasse or Xuhukoa (Chuhuquoua), an affluent of the Bidouze.
