Lauburu

The lauburu or Basque cross is a cross formed by Four Virgule S, each comma making up of three half Cercle S (a high first of half-circle followed by a bottom of half-circle, plus a second low of half-circle, twice larger, with the bottom of both others and connecting them).

In Basque, lau means Four and buru head.

This mythological symbol pre-indo-European, widely diffused by ancient civilizations since the Neolithic , could indicate the movement of time (year broken up into 4 seasons), or also the 4 elements of the life (water, ground, fire and air). The initial form consisted of 4 Bouquetin S turning around a circle. The lauburu stylizes of them the heads and the Svastika S Bouddhique S the horns.

This symbol, associated with several other mythological reasons (suns, bay-trees, etc), contributes to the ornament of the Basque steles discoïdales but also of pieces of furniture or lintels of doors. By its decorative virtues, associating good-naturedness and dynamism, it was essential like principal symbol of the Basque Country. There exists even the pendentive one that the majority of the Basque carry like symbol.
