Latin patriarch of Jerusalem
The Latin Patriarche of Jerusalem is one of the Eastern patriarch S catholic. It is the oldest title among all the Eastern catholic patriarchs since it goes back to 1099 of the time of the Croisades, and the only one of Latin rite.
The current holder is His Bliss Mgr Michel Sabbah (since 1987).
History
Period of the Crusades
The Latin presence in Holy Land date of IVe century, but the Latin Patriarchate was instituted only after the schism of 1054 between the East and the Occident, on arrival of crossed in 1099.
The Latin patriarchs followed one another Jerusalem of 1099 with 1187, then in Acre until the fall of the city in 1291, Europe then, but only like holders, until in 1847.
Contemporary period
The Basilique Saint-Laurent-out-the-walls was the seat of the Latin patriarch from Jerusalem to Rome of 1374 to 1847.
The patriarchal head office of Jerusalem was restored like sits residential the July 23rd 1847 by the pope Pie IX. The first holder, the patriarch Joseph Valerga, arrived at Jerusalem the January 17th 1848.
The nomination of Monseigneur Michel Sabbah in 1987 mark a rupture. It is indeed the first Palestinian Arab to carry the title. The Latin patriarch of Jerusalem then seems the local leader of a local Church.
