Latin Quarter of Quebec

The Latin Quarter of Quebec is current Old man-Quebec in the district of the City with Quebec. This district is surely that more visited and tourist of the province. It is this strengthened district where one finds the hotel which would be photographed the most in the world, the Château Frontenac, with his large terrace vis-a-vis the Town of Lévis. Are found there tens of coffees, shops tourist, restaurants, hotels and inns. According to some, it is about the most European sector of America.

History

This district corresponds, with the Old man-Quebec-Low-City, with the oldest part of Quebec. Chosen in 1620 by Champlain to install strong Saint-Louis, it revêt at the beginning of the colony a military and administrative character: the strategic heights of the Cape Diamant determined its vocation. Whereas the Low-City becomes populated tradesmen and craftsmen, the High-City is inhabited by the soldiers, the civils servant and the members of the clergy.

At the beginning of the XVIIIe century the allotment of the vast grounds conceded at the religious communities starts to answer the population growth. A certain marketing activity settles then in the High-City. Its defensive vocation in addition requires the construction of a strengthened enclosure: work of scale which will spread out over several years. Started at the end of the XVIIe century, under the French Mode, they continue until 1832, year when the Britanniques finish the construction of the citadel.

The strong military presence in this district limited its expansion a long time. Also, at the end of the XIXe century, several wanted to demolish the fortifications, considering them useless and blocking even the urban development. The gouvervor Dufferin will succeed in preserving the character of the strengthened city, while adapting space to the needs for a modern city.

After having undergone a certain degradation during the years 1950, the district knows since the years 1970 a new dash.

Ramparts, citadel, houses of another century, places and places historical… rich is the inheritance of the Old man-Quebec-High-City. The heritage of the former generations and the beauty of the places make a single place of it. It belongs to the historical district and the treasures which it conceals were worth to him the recognition of UNESCO, in 1985.

The majority of the buildings of the district date from the XIXe century. The construction of some goes back even to XVIIe and XVIIIe centuries. The place counts several commercial streets, of which the streets Midsummer's Day, Holy-Anne and De Buade. The public administration and the institutions still occupy a choice place in the middle of the city. Buildings testify some: the town hall, the Seminar of Quebec, the Convent of the Ursulines, the monastery of Augustines, the hospital of the Hospital. Like Old man-Quebec appears among the most sought tourist destinations, are there also several places of lodging, whose Château Frontenac celebrates it.

Many well arranged parks also furrow the territory. Among them, parks of the Esplanade, Artillery, Governors, the Montmorency park and the gardens of the Hotel-of-City. The walkers and the promeneuses ones can also benefit from the place D' Youville and the Dufferin terrace, which offers a unspoilable view on the Fleuve the St. Lawrence.
