Latin Etymology

The etymology is science studying the origin of the words, in particular, here, those coming from the Latin Langue. The French language being an evolution of the Latin language, many words composing it find their direction in old words resulting from Latin.

There exist many methods making it possible to pass from Latin to French.

General information

  • Beaucoup of Latin words lost their termination:

SON' US' - the sound MUR' US' - the wall TEMPL' UM' - the temple CORP' US' - the body TEMP' US' - time

  • Some Latin words lost their first Syllabe:

AV UNCULUS - the uncle BI' BERE - to drink Pa TO PAVE - the poppy

  • the labial consonants (B, P, F, V) replace others:

BRE' V' IS - in short NO' V' EM - nine A' P' RILIS - April HI' B' ERNUS - winter PRO' B' ARE - to prove DU' P' LEX - double

  • the words starting with SP, SC and ST are preceded by a French E:

SP ATIUM - the E space SP ECIES - the E spèce SP IRITUS - the E sprit SC WENT - the E scalier SP ERARE - E spérer ST ELLA - the E fabric

  • Some times, the E absorbs the S which follows and becomes an E:

ST ABULUM - the E table ST ATUS - the E tat ST AGNUM - the E tang SC HOLA - the E adhesive ST UDIUM - the E tude SP INA - the E fucks
