Last Judgment
See also: last Judgment (homonymy)
The last Jugement is an event which, according to the Bible and the Coran, will see the Résurrection Mort S and their judgment by God: “ Because the judgment will be in conformity with justice, And all those whose heart is right the approuveront. ” (PS. 94:15)
The last Judgment is normally that which must intervene at the end of times, when Christ reappears. According to certain theologists like Abélard, there are two judgments: an individual judgment with died of any individual, and the last Judgment, at the end of times.
The topic of the last Judgment hardly appears before XIe century (the first specimen known to date belonged to the cycle of Carolingian frescos (beginning of the 9th century) of the monastery St-Jean de Müstair, in Switzerland) and occupies the first place only at the 13th century. In Occident, one initially finds it with the reverse of the frontages, like a warning with the faithful ones. Then it occupies the Western rosettes (Chartres, Laon…). It arrives then on the tympanums (the prototype is the tympanum of Beaulieu in the Dordogne), initially of the side doors, then Western gate. It has a teaching function.
