Larry Graham

Larry Graham , born the August 14th 1946, is a type-setter and musician, more known as bass player. One owes him the invention of the technique known as of the Slap (“French claquer”), which made it possible to enrich the pallet by sounds available on its instrument of predilection. Initially, it used it to replace the beater when this one was absent.

Graham played in the famous group of funk Sly and the Family Stone of 1967 with 1972. After the separation of the group, due to the problem of Drug of the singer Sly Stone, Graham created its own group, Graham Central Station, which had a relative success in the Années 1970.

With the beginning of the year 1980, Graham makes some tubes in solo, as One in has Million You , which reaches the 9th place of the classification Billboard. After one long period of thin cow, it again makes speak about him in 1998 by signing the first parts of the concerts of Prince and by publishing an album on the label of this last, NPG Records. The bass player will occasionally accompany the artist on scene until the beginning of the year 2000, and will make a last appearance discographic at his sides on the box One nite alone… live in 2002. The influence that Larry Graham exerted on Prince at this period was considerable since as a Témoin of Jéhovah, he played a great part in his religious conversion.

It is also a pionner of the uses of the effects on the low one: it often combines a fuzz with a phaser for apocalyptic solos, which are not without pointing out the style of Jimi Hendrix.

Its style of slap is really very characteristic: it makes the good share with the power more than at the speed. It strikes these cords so that its inch “crosses” the cord instead of stopping on the key. Some of these lines can even comprise only one note, but its manner of accentuating it door all the piece (“Everyday People” of Sly and The Family Stone).

It uses low of Jazz type Low the active manufactured ones in Japan by Moon. Its low is named: Sunshine for the 4 cords and Moonshine for the 5 cords. It always has a characteristic look: white of the head to the foot, with often a cap of sailor. He pushes imagination until equipping his low white with cord gilded. There thus remains truly a character Funky.
