The origin of the name Larressingle
According to the legend, this strengthened village of the XIII° century would draw its name from the Gallo-Roman time. A Roman legion finding resistance vis-a-vis the local population would have had as an order of their lieutenant " Retro singuli" meaning, behind, one by one…
Its History
Larressingle enters the history at the beginning of the XI° century. The abbot Hugues, founder of the abbey of Condom, leaves his abbey load of Condom and fact gift with his successor of his grounds of Larressingle. Thus the abbots then bishops of Condom will become the lords of the places.
Its architecture
The drawbridge which preceded it is replaced today by a fixed bridge framed of two narrow pillars the walls sometimes still surrounded by curtains and crenels are reinforced by turns carrées.Its trapezoidal mass on four levels, flanked of a hexagonal turret, is bored coupled windows or with mullions; the interior, ruined, lets see in overhang some monumental chimneys.
The church
The castle has a Romance church dedicated to St Sigismond. With the XII° century, one replaces the primitive church by a church with the defense work. Indeed, a room refuge located on the floor was accessible by a staircase located behind the small door, on the right of the entry. A passage with the keep was possible since this room refuge.The church is made up of two parts. When one enters the church, one reaches directly in the chorus of the primitive church, with his vault in half dome. To be able to build the keep, it was necessary to cut the primitive church and to truncate it on the level of its transept. The bedside was then broken and the church lengthened towards the east to regain what it had lost towards the west. Thus two spans in broken cradle were added in XIIIe century.
