Laroin

Laroin is a common French, located in the department of the Yrénées-Atlantiques and the area Aquitaine.

Its inhabitants are the laroinais .

Geography

Located at the south-west of France, in Aquitaine region, Laroin is a small village of Miey of Béarn (medium of Béarn) of approximately 930 inhabitants, crossed by the Gave of Pau and one of its affluents Las Tampers.

History

Very old, Laroin was already populated at the time Gallo-Roman. It remains today on the slope dominating the valley of the gave only of the ruins of a tower out of rollers and a well at the bottom of which amphoras aquitano-Romans were found.

From the E century, the bishop of Lescar is the lord of Laroin and Saint-Faust until the Révolution. It is only from 1770 that the set up village cleans some (under the protection of Vincent Saint) takes its independence thanks to Mister de Noé.

Local pronunciation: larwén

One can propose a Basque etymology and regard Laroin as made up of Lar (reduction of larre = moor) and oin (foot): the unit meaning " with the foot of the lande". Laroin would be then the equivalent of the names of Romance origin like Pédegert, Pédelanne, etc (according to the Toponymic Dictionary of the Communes of Béarn of Michel Grosclaude)
