Larigot

The Larigot is a play of Orgue pertaining to the family of the changes. It is specific French organ and fact part of the nomenclature standardized by Dom Bedos. Traditionally, it takes seat with the Positif. Its height is always of 1 ⅓ foot. One formerly met it with the C-W communication “Arigot” or “Arigot”.

It gives the higher octave of the Nasard, i.e. the sixth Harmonique of the fundamental one; for example for a played do1, it makes hear ground 3. This is why it is called sometimes Petit Nasard.

The pipes constituting the play of Larigot belong to the family of the flutes (broad size). Although it is one of the acutest plays of the organ, it is neither piercing, nor aggressive.

Etymology

The rather obscure history of this name merges with that of the expression “to car-larigot” . The name as the expression are attested in XVe. It is about a kind of flute, small a flageolet whose primitive form of the name is arigot or harigot; the arigot gave larigot by agglutination of the article. It is not known from which this word comes; one suspected without proof Latin arinca , who indicates a corn species; so that the arigot would be originally a blowtorch (the musical instrument), in Latin fistula . One also suspected Latin aliquot without more certainty. As for car-larigot, one can there see only one picturesque popular expression representing somebody who drinks without stopping with the same posture as somebody who would play of the flute. Besides one finds the expression flûter which means the same thing, drinking. However, some see in this expression a quite different origin: " car-larigot" would come from " draw the Aligot " , culinary speciality containing volume which, by its texture, makes it possible to be amply stretched.

Use

Larigot enters the composition of the play of third of the Positif to six rows: Bumblebee 8, Flute 4, Nasard, Third Quad of nasard, and Larigot. By coupling, it also mixes with the big game of third of the Large Organ.

Occurrences

Almost as widespread as Nasard, Larigot meets on the majority of the instruments, as they are old or modern. Only the romantic organ or the symphonic organ of modest size can not have some. One estimates at at least 30.000 organ in the world having a larigot.
  • Larigot 1 ⅓ ': Positive, Co.-Marie-Madeleine Basilica, Saint-Maximin-the-Holy-Balsam, VAr (Isnard, 1772)
  • Larigot 1 ⅓ ': Positive of back, Collegial Holy-Cross of Bordeaux, (Dom Bedos, 1780)
  • Larigot 1 ⅓ ': Great Chorus, Large Organ of Notre-Dame de Paris (Cavaillé, Bushel, 1972)
  • Larigot 1 ⅓ ': Positive dorsal, Cathedral of Évreux (organ Quoirin-Decaris 2006)
