Largentière was an industrial small town at the 19th century. Today it is especially (apart from the summer season, very tourist) an important administrative center (court, departmental and prefectoral administrations…) thanks to its function of Sub-prefecture of the Ardeche.
Until 1982, the city was served by the railway (PLM then the SNCF) coming from Saint-Sernin. The old station was demolished; the site of the station is now occupied by the gendarmerie and the barracks of the firemen.
