The large tournaments is a Monnaie of Argent created by holy Louis at the time of his monetary reform of 1260-1263.
Description
The large one of money weighs approximately 4,52 grams of almost pure money, and is worth 12 sums of money tournaments, that is to say 1 Sou (equivalence of the time: 1 book = 20 pennies = 240 sums of money. Thus 1 penny = 12 sums of money).
History
The large one of money is created after the Seventh crusade (1248-1254), after holy Louis discovered the Arab monetary system. At the time of the same movement of reform, it creates also the first emissions of gold of the kingdom, the ecus of gold, but those of very limited number, with a purely political aim.
The large tournaments, them, are manufactured in abundance to be integrated in the monetary system complexes time.
They belong to the currencies most imitated with the Moyen-âge, as well by the laic lords as by the bishops or abbeys. Their striking is prolonged until the end of the Middle Ages.
