History of Teatro Regio

The origin

The decision to build with Turin true large a Opera, following the example other capitals of the time, was made in 1713, when the Traité of Utrecht sanctions the transformation of the Duchy of Savoy into Royaume of Piedmont, under Victor Amédée II. But several years passed before the idea of the Théâtre is concretized and it was only in 1738, under its successor Charles Emmanuel III, that work started. Hitherto (and since 1678) the Room of the Ducal Theater, known as of Saint Jean , had ensured, partly, this function. Conceived by Filippo Juvarra and registered voter in the block of the Secretariats, the new theater was carried out by Benedetto Alfieri. Work began in 1738 and continued until December 26th, 1740, it was inaugurated by the representation of the Arsace of Francesco de Feo, booklet of Pietro Metastasio. Born forty years before La Scala, Regio enorgueilit to have presented hundreds of first , among which, Manon Lescaut, the Bohemian one of Giacomo Puccini, Salome of Richard Strauss and the first of Gisele whom one incorrectly allots with Scala and which, on the contrary, took place in Turin on December 26th, 1842. The new theater could accommodate 2.500 spectators and its room was considered most imposing of Europe. The great name of the song and the ballet have crosses the boards of Regio, by confirming its glorious tradition. In 1798, during the French occupation of Turin, Regio was renamed name of National. In 1801, it became the Large Theater of Arts and, in 1804, the Imperial Theater, name which it preserved until 1814. After the fall of Napoleon and the return of the House of Savoy on the throne of Turin, also the theater took again its old name of Teatro Regio.

In 1838, Pelagio Pelagi brought a certain number of modifications to its structures. In 1905, Ferdinando Cocito proceeded to important work of transformation of the room and scene. In 1924, Giacomo Matte-Trucco, the brilliant originator of FIAT Lingotto, introduced into the tower of scene the reinforced concrete. From the beginning of the century, Regio became the temple of the music of Wagner and of Strauss and, at the same time, one of the theaters most opened with new operated French and at the young Italian verist school.

The fire and bombardments

The night of the 8 with the February 9th 1936 is a date dramatic for the cultural life and musical of Turin: the room and the scene of Teatrio Regio were completely destroyed by a furious fire. During the Second world war, the bombardment of 1942 and 1943 added ruins to the ruins and it is not that in 1966, qu ' after many vicissitudes one entrusted to the architect Carlo Mollino and with engineer Marcello Zavelani-Rossi the reconstruction project of the theater.

New Teatro Regio

New the Teatro Regio, rebuilt on the site of that preceding, Place Castello, in spite of its different design, fits harmoniously in the architectural context of the old place. It was officially inaugurated the evening of the April 10th 1973 with the representation of the opera " I Vespri Siciliani" of Giuseppe Verdi. An imposing sliding grid bronzes some, realized by Umberto Mastroianni, entitled Musical Odyssée, closes the main entrance. The new theatrical complex was conceived and carried out by adopting the most modern technologies. Beyond its function of theater, Regio plays a part much vaster: that of the propellent of cultural life and artistic center of Turin and Piedmont. After more than 248 years of activity, it does not cease being the witness of the history and the events of Turin, Italy and Europe. ----
