Large priests of Amon

The large priests of Amon ( Hemnetjer Tepienamon , first prophet of Amon) are the priest-kings of the town of Thèbes. Under Ramsès {{XI}}, the general Hérihor becomes first prophet of Amon and Master of the goods of the clergy of the god of Thèbes. Towards -1080, the dynasty ramesside dies out and Smendès, of Tanis, founds in the delta.

But the descendants of Hérihor make of Thèbes and its area a “kingdom” almost independent. This kingdom will exist in a climate where internal quarrels (deportation towards the oases) will reign and plunderings of tombs; the need will be made hide the royal mummies.

Three of the “large priests kings” make write their name in a cartouche, with the manner of the Pharaon S, to mark their capacity thus. These pontiffs will be nevertheless under the suzerainty of Tanis.
