Large fire of Bourges
The Large fire of Bourges , still called Large fire of the Madeleine , is a fire which devastated the town of Bourges at the end of the 15th century. He was so devastator for the city, which he marked the beginning of the decline of the capital of the Berry, which had much evil to go back some. He took place the July 22nd 1487.
Left the Holy district Sulpice, in the graver of a carpenter, fire, poked by a strong wind, was propagated quickly with the surrounding houses in wood side and developed on all is city, in popular quarters and very populated, like Saint Ambroix, Saint Bonnet, Saint Jean of the fields and Saint Pierre. The Mirebeaux streets and the beginning of the street Bourbonnoux were reduced in ashes. A third of the city was completely destroyed. The flames “licked” the walls of the cathedral, but it did not flame.
In this terrible fire, the aldermen transfer their files to leave in smoke, because the town hall, located at the Priory of Comtale, was also destroyed.
Entirely destroyed at the time of the large fire, the church Saint-Bonnet was rebuilt towards 1510 on marshy grounds, according to the plans of the architect Guillaume Pelvoysin.
