Large fifth
The Grosse Fifth is an organ stop of the family of the changes and more particularly of the family of the large changes.
Etymology: of five, because it indicates the fifth degree of the diatonic scale. It is said large because she speaks one or two octave S lower than the natural fifth of the 8 feet (and its pipes are thus two or four times larger).
Description
The Large Fifth is generally a basic play flute giving the third Harmonique of fundamental of the set of 16 feet. More rarely it will be harmonized in principal soft. It is a set of 5 1/3 feet to the handbooks and 10 2/3 with the pedal. It is only with the pedals that one gives him sometimes the basic name of Nasard or Low Fifth ( Quint Bass in English, Quintbass , Quintenbass in German).
Use
The Large manual Fifth of 5 1/3 is a rather rare play of change; it enters traditionally the composition of the big game of third to the Frenchwoman: Funds 16,8,4,2, Large Fifth 5 1/3 (or Large Nasard), Large Third 3 1/5, Nasard 2 2/3, Third 1 3/5. But as it is optional, one often makes the economy of it, preferring a quintaton of 16 sometimes to him.On the other hand, the Large Fifth 10 2/3 of pedal is a very widespread play, even on modest instruments because it is a means economic to obtain one 32 feet by exploiting an acoustic phenomenon, that of the “resulting sound. ”
When one draws one together 16' and the Large Fifth 10 2/3, the 2 pipes which speak respectively emit the second and the third harmonic of fundamental virtual of 32'. It is not there, but the ear, “accustomed” to hear its harmonics, “will recreate it”, by distinguishing the “beats” of which the frequency is the difference of the two really emitted serious sounds. One really believes to hear the 32'. One thus saved a set of 32', of which the pipe the longest fact nevertheless more than 10,50 m (5,30 m if it is a bumblebee). This is why the organists often say that the 10 2/3 is the “32' of poor”.
Example: the C 1, most serious of the pedal is inserted with:
-
one 16', playing C 0, of frequency 33 Hz
- the Large Fifth 10' 2/3, playing the Ground 0 naturalness, of frequency 49,5 Hz
It occurs a “beat”, of frequency 49,5 - 33 = 16,5 Hz, is that of C - 1, note which 32 the' absent one would produce. This phenomenon is obviously not perfect and functions only with the lowest notes. As of the second octave, the ear distinctly hears the fifth and the basic effect resultant is reduced. Moreover a subtractive sound resulting is inevitably accompanied by its mirror, the additive resulting sound. In the example above one will thus hear, in addition to resultant 32', although attenuated, the third harmonic 6 2/5 (49,5 + 33 = 82,5 Hz).
Much rarer is the Large Fifth of 21' 1/3 which corresponds to a resultant of 64 feet. To justify the so serious presence of register, is needed a monumental organ.
