Large chancellery of France

The Grande chancellery of France was consisted the body of the Chancelier S, such as the chancellor, the Minister of Justice, the large ushers, secretaries of the king of the large college, the treasurers, controllers, chafewax and other officers.

The establishment of the Large chancellery of France is as old as the Monarchie, it did not borrow its name of the title of chancellor of France: because, under the first race of our kings, those which made the functions of chancellor did not bear the name from there; they were called chief clerks, guards of the royal ring or scel, and they was the notaries or secretaries of the king whom one then called “cancellarii”, with cancellis, because they worked in a closed enclosure of bars; and such was also undoubtedly the origin of the name of chancellery.
