Synopsis
Hector Valentine (Bourvil), a French who lives since several years with the Canada, learns by his notary that it has just inherited a sawmill in the the Vosges. Of return in France, it notes with spite that the " Haut-Fer" is in ruin but decides to make revive the company. However, another sawmill already exists in the village, and its owner, Therraz, happy of the disappearance of his competitor, are presented to Valentine with an aim of buying his heritage to him. In front of the refusal to sell and the determination of the newcomer, Therraz will not have of cease to put sticks in the wheels of Valentine.
At the time of an auction, this last is located by Laurent (Lino Ventura) and Mick (Jean-Claude Roland), two former prisoners come to achieve a revenge. The latter rather quickly include/understand the situation of Valentine: a transferee with the head of a sawmill in ruin, without reliable employee and essuyant the blows of an unfair competition. Laurent then proposes to him to engage prisoners in parole as a labor. Valentine hesitates until Laurent reveals to him his past. The former prisoners are then engaged in the sawmill, giving him the air of a camp of truculent workers. In front of the provocations, Valentine and Laurent answer blow for blow. Laurent then asks his owner to insist that one of his/her held friends can join them, certain Reichmann. Little by little Laurent sets up his intention…
