Large Mosque of Touba

the Large Mosque of Touba is the most important building of the town of Touba to the Senegal and one of the largest Moslem religious monuments of Africa.

History

Its construction was decided by the Sheik Ahmadou Bamba in 1926. The son and first succeseor of Bamba, Sheik Mouhamadou Moustapha Mbacké invests himself with body and heart for the realization of the project, in spite of a national and international context very difficult marked by the economic crisis of the years 1930 and the Second world war. Work started after Mouhammadou Falilou Me Backé wire of Ahmadou Bamba received in lease of the Administration a ground of 400 hectares. The mosque was inaugurated Friday June 7th 1963 by Mouhammadou Falilou Me Backé.

Structure

The Mosquée is equipped with 4 Minaret 66 one and height meters S for the angles of 86,80 meters and is surmounted by 3 large Coupole S. These minarets can be seen until 10km of Touba. The mosque has 6 large doors: the main entrance is with the Is, a door with the western and two on each lateral side. In the mosque, one reaches the Mausolée of Sheik Ahmadou Bamba, built with the north-eastern angle of the building, close to the room of the prayers. The tomb of a surface of approximately 10x10m. The Coran is read in the mosque 28 times each day.
