Large Dublin
Grand Dublin (in English, Greater Dublin Area (GDA) or quite simply Greater Dublin ) is a term used to describe the town of Dublin, capital of the Irish Republic, and the surrounding counties: Dun Laoghaire-Rathdown, Fingal, Kildare, Meath, Dublin-South and Wicklow.
Introduction
The term is described in the Planning and Development Act, 2000 (Section 21) , like in other statutory documents on the planning and the development of the area; in this context it is represented by the Dublin Regional Authority and the Mid-East Regional Authority . The city and the five counties are also mentioned in the order creating the Dublin Transportation Office , giving functions and representations to the office in Large Dublin, but not using the term.Large Dublin recovers: 6980 km ².
Alternatives
The term is used interchangeablement, wrongly, with that of Dublin Region , which refers only to the area of the four local authorities of Dublin described in the Local Government Act, 1991 (Regional Authorities) (Establishment) Order, 1993 . It is also interchangeable, still wrongly, with the Dublin Metropolitan Area , the urban part of the capital as it is described in several documents, especially those referring to the Garda Síochána and to the legislative steps.
Population
With the last Census, in 2006, the total population of Large Dublin was of: 1661185 inhabitants. Estimates published by the Central Statistics Office suggest that it will go up to 2 million in 2021. The statistics are based on a déconstruction by area of the statistics before national, and suppose that the demographic trends will be maintained at the same rate/rhythm.
