Large Blue Hole
The Grand Blue Hole is a great underwater fault off the coast of the Belize.
It is located close to the center of Lighthouse Reef, a small atoll with 80 km of the continent and Belize City. The hole is almost perfectly circular, of a diameter of more than 300 m and of 120 m of depth.
During its formation, for the last glacial period when the levels of sea were much lower, it was a calcareous cave. When the level of the ocean rose, the caves were flooded, and the roof crumbled.
Discovered
This site was made famous for Jacques-Yves Cousteau which declared it like one of the ten principal sites of diving in the world. In 1971, it came there with its boat, the Calypso, to draw up a chart its depths there.
