Large Bénare

The Grand Bénare is a mountainous top of the island of the Meeting, the culminating point of the commune of Three-Basins.

Regarded as the third plus high summit of the island after the Piton of Snows and the Large Dull, it reaches 2.898 meters of altitude. Its name would come to him from the Malgache “ Benara ” meaning “ where the weather is very cold ” in French.

Rise

In the History of the Meeting, the top of Large Bénare was reached relatively early compared to the other tops. One reaches the top by a path which leaves the top of the Maïdo and which passes in front of a Glacière which was formerly exploited by the slaves of Mrs Desbassayns. Of up there, per good weather, one has a unspoilable view on the Cirque of Mafate.
