Large (the Vosges)

Grand is a common French, located in the department of the the Vosges and the area Lorraine.

The inhabitants are called Grandérinois or Grandésiniens.

Geography

The commune is located at 22 km in the west of Neufchâteau, with the borders of the department of the Haute-Marne, on a calcareous plate surrounded by forests.

History

The locality, which owes its name to the Gallic god Grannus , was called Andesina in Antiquity and sometimes, more recently, Large-the-Roman .

70-140: Construction of a Gallo-Roman sanctuary dedicated to Apollo - Grannus , skilful association of a Roman god and a Gallic god which will give the name Latinized Granum and the current name of the village.

Amphitheater of Large Gallo-Roman of the 1st century restored starting from 1963.

With its capacity of 17.000 places, it is classified among ten vaster of the Roman world.
