Use of the title

In Russia

Large-duke is a Russian Titer of nobility designating the male children, grandchildren and nephews of the Tsar. They are entitled to the predicate of Imperial Altesse .

The Russian term, velikii kniaz is translated perhaps better by Large-prince than by large duke , kniaz being usually translated by prince . Initially reserved with largest of the Russian princes, like the large-duke of Kiev or the large-duke of Moscovie, the title became that of the family members imperial after the imperial crowning of Ivan IV in 1547. The current one claiming with the Russian imperial throne, although this question is discussed, carries the title of large-duke of Moscow .

Out of Russia

The title of Large-duke is granted to certain European principalities with the modern Time: the Tuscan in 1569, the Lithuania at the 16th century and the Finland in 1582. At the time Napoleonean, this title becomes rather current in the Confédération of the Rhine. With the Congress of Vienna of 1815, other Grand Duchies are formed in Germanic Confederation. Only the State remaining to be entitled Grand-duché is the Luxembourg.

Similar titles

  • One should not confuse the title of Large-duke with that of Mégaduc (Greek: megadoukas ) which indicates the Admiral Byzantine Empire.
  • One should not confuse either the title of Large-duke with that of Archiduc which is specific to the Austria.

Orthography and uses

Agreement

Capital letter

At the head of sentence (of worms or title…) one can find the capital letter only on only the G :
  • Large-dukes and large-duchesses has the step on simple the Duc S and duchesses.
In the cases other than the capital letter at the head of sentence and others, one puts two capital letters (on the G and the D thus):
  • For example if a person is called “the Large-Duke”.
  • One can also find “the Large-Duke” where one would employ “the King” with a capital letter.
  • One can also find written “the Grand-Duché of Luxembourg” for “the Grand-duché of Luxembourg” (it is there the orthography given by the the Petit Robert 2 ) for example as one can meet “the Kingdom of Belgium” for “the Kingdom of Belgium”.

Current use

In the terminology describing the political reality of today, the Grand-Duché indicates in absolute the Luxembourg (just like the the United Kingdom indicates the Great Britain and the Northern Ireland, both being single in their kind among the Actual positions). In a a little humorous way one speaks sometimes about the “small Grand Duchy”. Large-ducal ends up becoming synonymous with Luxembourg - example: “large-ducal French” -, even if the the Petit Robert indicates “especially used in Belgium and to Luxembourg in this direction”.

The round of…

In familiar language, to make the round of the large-dukes , it is to make the round of the restaurants, the luxurious cabarets.

Raptors

The Hibou large-duke still called Large-duke of Europe is a raptor, this qualifier of Large-duke being divided by other species of the kind Bubo .
