Large-ducal palate
The large-ducal palate of the town of Luxembourg is the residence downtown of the large-duke, Head of State of the Luxembourg. It is in the center of the old city, not far from the Guillaume place.
In the beginning, the site accommodated the Town hall, built in 1572 - 1574, destroyed by an explosion of powder at the 16th rebuilt century then. The building, of Spanish Renaissance style, was increased at the 19th century and it accommodated the House of Commons. Starting from 1890, it became also the residence of the large-dukes. It was the subject of a restoration to the beginning of the year 1990.
Nowadays, the palate is kept by on-call service of the castles, which depends on the Unit of guard and mobile reserve (UGRM) of the large-ducal police force. A solemn changing takes place once a month.
