Large-Bassam

Large-Bassam is a town of Ivory Coast, in the east of Abidjan.

History

Founded in the middle of the 19th century century by the Admiral Méquet, the city was the French administrative center of 1893 with 1896. On this date, he moved with Bingerville following an epidemic of Yellow fever. The city remained an important port before being outdistanced by the expansion of Abidjan in the years 1930.

The Lagune Ébrié divides the city into two:

Old Bassam

City of the French colony. Architecture is interesting. It is a attended seaside. The craft industry is important. The National museum of the costume of Ivory Coast is installed in the district.

New Bassam

On thefirm one, the district is now the center town with marketing activities. The two shares of the city are connected by a bridge.

Celebrates

In November takes place the Fete of Koundoum which is the greatest ceremony at the Nzima to celebrate the end of the year and the beginning of the following one.

In November takes place the festival of " abissa" , which consists of rejoicings and reconciliations, where any act of violence is prohibited. This festival can also be the moment to introduce a new king to the Ashanti people.

All the ethnos groups Ashanti are concerned with the abissa (Nzima, Agni, Baoulé, Allandian, Adjoukrou, Ébrié, Abouré, Fanti, Avikam, Laouien, Abron, etc).

Some go there with a statuette representing a family member or one (E) friendly (E), missing. The ritual consists in taking part in the dances crowned with its statuettes.

This festival lasts one week and ends in the brass band.

Education

Large-Bassam account 2 College S, 5 colleges and 28 public elementary schools. The local authorities estimate the rate of schooling at 80%.

Administration

Large-Bassam Commune of the Ivory Coast thanks to a decree of December 31st 1914 was the first which set up part of the circle of Large-Bassam in mixed Commune. A few years later, in October 1955, Large-Bassam becomes Commune of full exercise with an elected Municipal council and a Mayor. This municipal council east dissolves in January 1960 and replaced by a special delegation of three members. In 1965, after reorganization of its territory, the Sub-prefecture of Large-Bassam will include/understand from now on: urban center of Large-Bassam, villages of Moossou and dependence, Azuretti, Ebrah, Glazed 1, Glazed 2, Modeste, Mafiblé, Gbamié, Yakassél Yakaassé 2 Mondoukou.

A law of 1978 instituted 27 communes of full exercise on the territory of the country.
