The census in tax matter of 1412-1413, carried out on order of Charles III of Navarre, compared with that of 1551 of the men and the weapons which are in this kingdom of Navarre of in on this side the ports , reveals a demography in strong growth. The first indicates to Arros the presence of 5 fires, the second of 14 fires. Of the same Larceveau counted 43 fires for the first census (and Cibits 9) and 72 in 1551 (and Cibits 29).

The Pilgrimage of Compostelle

On the Via Podiensis of the Pilgrimage of Saint-Jacques-to-Compostelle.

One comes from Ostabat, the next commune is Saint-Jean-the-Old man, the church of Holy Marie-madeleine of the Recluse or Betbéder.

The hamlet of Utziat or Utxiat

It is composed of some houses, heiresses of the houses of the donats of the Holy-Madeleine priory-hospital. The road divided the hospital formation in the west, the house prieurale against which leant the Romance church, the unused cemetery and ruins of the mill; in the east, four last houses of the donats raised of their wishes to the removal of the hospital in 1784.
It lodged as of 1199 the pilgrims and also the meetings (juntas) of the States de Navarre.
It counted in 1343, 23 people including seven sisters and three women of donats. The chapter elected three brothers donats: hospital, a fabrician (repairing) and a keyboard (treasurer). He distributed for the year food between the community, the servants and the pauvres.

These “Donats” were often the mainstays of the charitable institutions. They were the laic ones which “were given” to Christ by minor wishes: poverty, obedience, chastity only in the event of widowhood.
