Larache

Larache (Arab: rear RTL العرائش) is a small town (107  000  hab) of the Morocco known under the ancient name of Lixus .

Larache is modernized with a fast pace. It is located at the north of Morocco about with 86  kilometers of Tangier.

It was Spanish of 1610 with 1686 and during the protectorate of 1911 with 1956.

Geographical location

The Province of Larache was created on October 14th, 1985, it belongs to Wilaya de Tétouan which belongs to the economic area of Tangier-Tétouan.

The Province of Larache is limited, in North by the Province of Tétouan and the Province of Tangier-Asila, in the South by the Province of Kenitra, in the East by the Province of Chefchaouen and in the West by the Atlantic Ocean.

From the relief point of view, one distinguishes in the Province from Larache:

  • an mountainous area which constitutes the Western prolongation of the Rifaine chain, located mainly at the level of the rural communes of Blessed-Arous, Zaaroura, Tazrout and Blessed-Gorfet.
  • of the marly hills surrounding a low and marshy plain.
  • along the coast, a cord of fixed dunes constitutes the plates of R' mel.

Climate

The Province of Larache profits from a Mediterranean climate characterized by the one wet and fresh season alternation from October at April and one dry and hot season from May to September.

Pluviometry annual average varies between 700 and 800 mm and it is concentrated in its near total between October and April.

As for the temperatures, they vary between 6°C in cold period and 32°C in hot period.

The hydrographic network of the Province includes/understands the Loukkos Wadi and its affluents, the tablecloth of the R' mel, the Stopping Wadi El Makhazine, the Stopping of guard of Loukkos, three lakes collinaires, as well as many sources of water

Surface

The Province of Larache covers a surface of approximately 2.783 km ².

Its population is about 431.476 (Census of 1994), including 201.485 in the urban communes and centres and 229.991 in the rural communes. Thus the rate of urbanization is located at 46,7%. As for the average density, it is of 155 habitants/km ².

Today of many districts made appearance in periphery of the city. Largest in construction at present, is undoubtedly the district of " Almaghrib Aljadid" (in French new Morocco ). This one offers the real perpectives ones for the future of the city, so much its surface is large.

Population of the province

According to the General Census of the Population and Habitat of 2004, the population of the province is of 472.386 inhabitants, including 219.577 in the communes and urban centres and 252.809 in the rural communes. Thus, the rate of urbanization it accounted for 46,5%.

The number of listed households amounted to 89.944 including 46.848 urban households and 43.096 rural households. The town households thus account for 52,08% of the whole of the households of the province.

As for the average density, it is of 170 hab/km ².

Places to visit

The place more animated is located around the central .place or places Release of style arabo-Andalusian, bordered of many coffees in terraces.

On this place, the door Bab el Khemis delimits one of the entries in old the médina.

Inside old the médina:

  • the souk Esseghir (Small Souk),
  • the market with vegetables installed permanently,
  • mazes of lanes which go down to the port,
  • the passages, houses with the coloured doors…

In the center, Andalusian architecture is often present, and in this style you will be able to admire as of July 2002 the market hall which is in the course of restoration (with 200m central place).

A pine forest is with 500m central place and extends on km along the ocean.

Other forests of pines, eucalypti or oaks cork are near Larache.

The beach

The beach, located on other bank of the river, is accessible either to foot (300m central place) with crossing in the boat, or in the car or the bus by circumventing river (10 km).

There are two beaches delimited by a pier: one with waves (for the bodyboarders!) who extends very far, and the other, nearer to the arm of the sea, calmer, perfect to swim.
