Lara Fabian (of its true name Lara Crokaert ) was born on January 9th, 1970 with Etterbeek, in Belgium. It is a French-speaking singer-author-type-setter of level international. Lara Fabian took then Canadian nationality and resides from now on, in Montreal, Brussels and Paris.

Childhood and adolescence

The father of Lara (Pierre) is Flemish and his mother (Luisa Fabiano, from where its name of scene " Fabian") sicilian is . The first name Lara comes from the female main character of the Doctor Jivago . Lara spends the first five years of its life to the foot of the volcano Etna, with Catane, and returns to Belgium only thereafter. The small family settles then in the suburbs of Brussels, with Ruisbroek. It is also at the five years age that Lara has the catch for the music and the song by listening to Eve Brenner with the radio, in the car, only with his/her father. She declares then: “Dad, I am singer” and it starts to sing the singing exercises of Eve with a surprising facility.

For the Saint Nicolas's Day, at the 8 years age, his/her parents offer a Piano to him. Lara then starts to take courses of song, dance, piano, musical theory… and it begins its musical education with the Royal Academy from Brussels in 1978. She will study there during ten years the lyric song while starting to write melodies and texts. The artists fetishes of Lara at that time (and still today) are Barbra Streisand and Queen.

It is into 1986 that Lara Fabian meets Marc Lerchs, studying in journalism, which pays its studies by making piano-bar in Brussels. It is 16 years old, it has 25 of them. It is allured by its voice, and a true collaboration starts. Some do not hesitate to speak about Marc Lerchs like the " true discoverer of Lara Fabian". It is, in any case, the first (with Pierre, the dad of Lara!) to accept its destiny of star, and, it does not compose to him less than eight songs which they record in particular in his small home studio, on one 4 tracks Teac 3440, with a piano bastringue and Juno 106 for only instruments.

The first titles are " The Aziza is in pleurs" on the face has, song evoking the accident of helicopter having endeuillé the rally Paris-Dakar in January 1986, and having in particular cost the life the organizer Thierry Sabine and to the singer Daniel Balavoine (the original version is visible on http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=WEArr4MTwDI) and " There was " on the face B (visible on You Tubes on the following bond: http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=CtO6Dv0ojV0)

The mixing is ensured by Yvan Léonard, scenario writer-speleologist, of a great artistic sensitivity, and friend of Marc Lerchs. The relations are excellent between the two accomplices, Lara, and the parents of Lara. A true friendship settles in all the small team. Marc Lerchs becomes the appointed pianist of Lara, and they give song recitals between 1986 and 1988 in various cabarets of Brussels, of which Black Bottom and Coffee of the Small island. It is the great time (according to Marc Lerchs)!

When Lara gains the contest " Springboard of the musique" festival of Wallonia in 1986 (because it gains many regional contests since the 14 years age), it is quite naturally in Marc Lerchs, that it and her Pierre father asks two titles to be reproduced on the very first disc 45 turns vinyl which leaves on this occasion. It is quickly decided, unanimously of the small team, to place the title " The Aziza is in pleurs" on the face has, and a second title " It there avait" on the face B.

At that time, Marc Lerchs on television has his entries national of public service, and it is thus with the RTBF that this face B is recorded (contrary to the face, made in the small home studio, with small a réverb' Alesis, bought in particular for the occasion by the dad!).

In very an other register, Marc Lerchs is already very close into 1986 to a group worship of the music underground, bench in Brussels between 1981 and 1990: the American group Tuxedomoon, (which had made in its time the first parts of the concerts of Devo) composed of Steven Brown (voice, sax, composition), Blaine Reininger (violin, composition), Winstong Tong, Peter Principle, Bruce Geduldig and Luc Van Lieshout. It is recording some titles with Steven Brown for her album solo " Half Out" and by-product the album " Steven Brown reads John Keats" , when the project of disc with Lara Fabian is born.

While Lara, young unknown singer, records her first titles with Marc Lerchs with the RTBF, this pleasing last in the studio Steven Brown, figure of the American music underground of the years 1980.

To give pleasure with Marc, Steven Brown, which has a half hangover, records the solo of sax of " It there avait" on the face B of the first disc of very young Lara, without too much knowing what it does there. The catch sax precedes one day the catch of voice of Lara, that Steven Brown thus never heard! This curious episode is attested by the discography of Steven Brown, which one finds on the www.joeyboy.de site, and on which appears the small pocket of this 45 T collector of Lara (become very required on E-bay).

Better: Steven Brown makes during the recording of the solo a track supplements in impro, which becomes instrumental with whole share, baptized " By Night " , and resulting from variations on " There was " , and that one can listen on the http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=RngumQQy5IQ bond.

This piece (Co-signed by mutual agreement, in this ultimate misadventure, by the two accomplices) will be taken again in 2002 by the Belgian jazzman Steve Houben, accompanied by a symphony orchestra, at the time of the spectacle " The Bridge of the Euro " given to Brussels in December 2002 to mark the swing of the European countries to the Euro. Spectacle designed by a certain Marc Lerchs, still him, which meanwhile made its way in the field of the institutional event-driven communication in Belgium. This symphonic video, variation thus on " It there avait" , is visible on http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=09p7rsVd6GE.

Thus, the irony of fate wanted that this song, which had initially been made up for very young Lara, made in a televised way the round the world tour fifteen years later, in the form of one… instrumental!

Benefitting from the entries of Marc Lerchs to the RTBF, Lara Fabian still records some models, primarily compositions of Marc, who it Co-sign sometimes, of which the titles " These Birds-là" (song on the suicide, remixée by a Belgian, Julien Leclercq, which one can discover from now on on the http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=wfscxcWlms4 bond), " If demain" , " Nights blanches" (text of Pietro Pizzuti), " Sentinel perdue" (text of Nancy Guilmain). The whole is mixed at the time by Yvan Léonard, autodidact of the sound to the pointed artistic sensitivity.

Thanks to Yvan Léonard, this first 45 turns of Lara Fabian arrives in the hands of Claude Rappé, who works with RTL Luxembourg, and which gives it to Hubert Terheggen, producer with RTL. As soon as it heard it, Hubert Terheggen goes down on Brussels and comes in Black Bottom to listen to Lara and Marc which occur this evening there. Allured, he announces at the conclusion of the evening that he takes Lara to represent Luxembourg in Eurovision. He will die unfortunately a few months later of an car accident, without knowing the planetary destiny of his small protected.

With the advertisement of the participation of Lara in Eurovision, the euphoria is with its roof in the small team. But the ways of Lara Fabian and Marc Lerchs will separate at this time, the production of RTL having suddenly decided to assign to Lara a whole Parisian team, asked to take the singer in hand, relooker, to provide him song, musicians and arrangers, in order to make this Eurovision a victory. The Parisian recording company which signs it at this moment binds him actually the hands for two years (it will not leave anything any more significant in the two years which will follow the Eurovision contest, moreover) for unexplained remained reasons of marketing.

But Eurovision approaches. The singer interests them, but its young type-setter moves gently towards the exit door: the French producers prefer to place titles on which they have the rights of edition and discount copious royalties. The young Belgian, who are 27 years old does not make the weight vis-a-vis the French producers, and the student-pianist are isolated two weeks before the departure for Eurovision and the song which he proposed replaced by another. Neither Lara nor its family are in position to contradict this decision: an argument with these producers whom one hardly knows would be unthinkable. And would be likely to make hood all the Eurovision project. And then, they do not have yet the practice of the practices of the show business (they learned quickly, Pierre Crockaert having become with the wire of time the agent of his/her daughter).

A few weeks before Eurovision 1988, RTL organizes in Luxembourg with the Louvigny Villa a press conference to present Lara to the journalists. Lara made a point of inviting Marc Lerchs, who, for a few days, has known that it will not form part of the Eurovision adventure. To pay homage to him, and with surprised of all, it makes it go up on scene to accompany it, and sing one of its songs, " It there avait". At the end of the press conference, it launches out then (accompanied by a musical and video backing carried out by RTL, with in bottom of the images of Paris-Dakar) in " the Aziza is in tears " , another song of Marc. In any discretion, it is a subtle and elegant last-ditch struggle which Lara delivers as a public, to show the producers that she disapproves the ousting of her type-setter of the first hour.

The video camera of Pierre Crockaert, the father of Lara, turns, and this moment is immortalisé (extracted visible on the http://fr.youtube.com/watch?v=UfVgn9J1LHE bond). They are their good-byes, impressed sadness, certainly, but they are left in good terms.

Years later, with the appearance then generalization of Internet, these vestiges of the first collaborations 1986-1988 (ten titles in the form of models) start to circulate then to spread itself on the Net, and to be exchanged among certain informed fans. In form audio since 1999 and video as from 2007. Touching words, strong melodies, these titles finish miraculeusement (thank you Mr Lerchs), thanks to the Web, by finding the way of a less and less confidential public.

The D-day arrives finally, and Lara thus takes part in 1988 in Large the Concours Eurovision of the Song with the song Croire .

The video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sErUUwsMyio#GU5U2spHI_4, perfectly new, was recorded by the video camera of Pierre Crockaert, on April 29th, 1988, the contest day before.

On the plate, environment is difficult, and hard competition between the various countries.

The atmosphere is with mistrust, the baffles of the returns of scene function badly, and the 140 violins which had been promised in Lara are finally… only one score!

And the horn plays false…

Lara ensures the repetition in spite of the ambient stress. It announces that it does not get along, and a technician runs to his sides to listen what does not go in the returns.

Lara purposely makes not be given thoroughly, not to wake up the mistrust of the other candidates: it keeps the surprise of its voice for the following day…

Environment…

This song was the good choice: the following day, it finishes 4th. It represents the Luxembourg. Its song, translated into English ( Trust ) and into German ( Glaub ), is sold with approximately: 500000 specimens in Europe.

The same year, Lara leaves to the Quebec with Franck Olivier to promote a song ( I know ) that it recently recorded and fall in love with Belle Province. She undertakes then studies of infantile criminology in Italy, but she stops at the end of one year, persuaded that its destiny is not played here. She meets indeed Rick Allison in May 1990 in a piano-bar of Brussels. It is the love at first sight artistic and in love. Little time afterwards, they decides all to give up and leave to try their chance in an unknown country, the Canada.

Before that, the father of produced Lara and finances (with all its economies) the first album of Lara, Lara Fabian .

Departure for Quebec

With only little money and two bags, the two in love ones settle with Montreal. Lara creates then its own label of music, Clandestine Productions. It is in August 1991 which the album Lara Fabian leaves to Canada. Starting is difficult, but one evening, all Quebec blotti at home with the favor of a snowstorm, discovers Lara on television, and the following day, the sales fly away. The Inhabitants of Quebec fall very quickly under the charm and the disc is sold with: 100000 specimens. It will be certified but, then platinum the following year. Return in Europe

Two months later, the album Pure leaves in the European French-speaking countries. Its first gold disc, it receives it in Belgium, in September. As from this moment, Lara will be everywhere. Pure is sold finally to approximately two million specimens… It is rare that an artist has a rise if fulgurating. In 1997 also, Lara signs a contract with Sony to record English albums.

The singer again attracts the cinema and one asks him to compose a song with his Rick Allison partner for the film Daylight with Sylvester Stallone. The year 1998 starts with a round. Lara also receives a Victoire of the Music for the Révélation of the Year .

Beginning 1999 leaves its first album live which is classified directly in first place of the sales, détrônant Notre-Dame de Paris . It is the singer to have sold the most discs in the Benelux countries (Belgium, Netherlands and Luxembourg). It is also nominated with the Official reception of the ADISQ in the categories Female Interprète of the year and Artiste being illustrated more except Quebec .

In July 1999, seeing the six million albums sold in Europe, Polydor decides to leave the Québécois albums Lara.

In spite of an intense promotion, Lara finds time to record its first English album with the the United States, between New York and San Francisco. She writes songs with her accomplice of always, Rick Allison, but also Dave Pickell, Walter Afanasieff, Glen Ballard and Patrick Leonard. This album ( Lara Fabian ) leaves in 1999 when it reaches the first place of the sales in France and Suisse.

Its second individual will be Love by Grace . 2000 are one year of madness for Lara Fabian: it leaves in promotion in the whole world, with the Japan, to Europe, to South America, in the United States of course… In November, it receives a new Felix, that of the artist being more illustrated except Quebec in another language that French.
