Lappajärvi

Lappajärvi is a municipality west of the Finland, in the province of Western Finland and the area of Ostrobotnie of the South.

It is the commune of birth of Timo Kotipelto, singer of the group Stratovarius and the writer Arto Melleri.

Geography

The commune shelters one of principal geological curiosities of the country. It is about the lake Lappajärvi, a circular big lake of 142 km ², which results from the impact there are 73.3 ± 5.4 million years of a Météorite. The Cratère of impact today is very eroded, the relief between the highest points of circular Crete and the bottom of the lake not exceeding the 150 meters (for 17 km in diameter).

The commune of Lappajärvi includes/understands Western and septentrional banks, approximately 2/3 of the turn of the lake (in all 124 km of bank) and 3/4 of its total surface area. The highest points of Crete are located on the common neighbors of Vimpeli and Alajärvi. The principal village is located at the northern end of the lake. The immediate circumference of the lake is generally cultivated, the peak being covered with Forêt S.

The large island of Kärnä is connected to the administrative center by a bridge.

The municipalities bordering are Vimpeli in the east, Alajärvi in the south, Lapua in south-west, Kauhava in the west, Kortesjärvi in the North-West, Evijärvi in north and Veteli in the North-East (Ostrobotnie-Power station).

History

Lappajärvi belongs to remote the Paroisse of Jakobstad until in 1637. It becomes on this date a vault of Jakobstad, before becoming an autonomous parish in 1818. The commune is founded in 1865 in complement of the parish.

The 20th century saw it losing 50% of its population, and the rate/rhythm of fall is currently one of strongest of the area
