The Seigneur Jean III made, in 1458, of the alder plantation a city strengthened of Ferrain of which it us remains about it that some turns of defense. The alder plantation gave its name to a family “Lannoy” which occupied of high positions in the history of the Netherlands.

Origins

The name of Lannoy comes from Latin Alnetum, i.e. planted place of Aulne S. In novel. he said Alnoi and by transposition Phonétique became Lannoi, then Lannoy.

By the Latin etymology, one can make go up the origin of the Fief of Lannoy at the time of the Roman domination in Gaules, but this name appears only later in the oldest known documents, at the time where already the mode Féodal functioned. Lannoy was then a seigniory made up, which concerned the baronnie of Cysoing. It was a back stronghold of the Room of Lille.

To one time which seems to have followed closely the first feudal organization, the seigniory of Lannoy gave its name to a noble family of the country, which one frequently meets in the genealogical and diplomatic documents as of the 11th century. One finds many mentions of knights of the name of Lannoy with frequent alternatives of orthography (such as Lannois, De Lannais, De Alnoi, De Alneto, Del Ausnoit, Del Aunoi), but only the character on which weighs less uncertainty is Mahaud or Mahienne De Lannoy, heiress of the goods of the House of Lannoy and Lys and known stock of the family which bears this name.

In their reports/ratios and enumerations, the lords of Lannoy do not separate this ground from that of Lily, in only one stronghold containing 68 bonniers is approximately 964 hectares and extending on Toufflers, Hem and Sailly. It is almost certain that they were in the beginning two distinct grounds, whose meeting former to the enumeration of 1392 gave a certain importance and especially more value to the grounds whose lords of Lannoy bore the name.

The union of Lannoy and Lys in only one and even feudal ground lasted until the Revolution. The construction of the stronghold of Lannoy downtown in 1458, broke neither the unit of the stronghold, nor none the bonds which attached the two localities. The city necessarily created for itself private interests which gave rise to the Prévôté of Lannoy, but the unit remained the Baillage of Lannoy and Lys, which extended moreover to the stronghold from the Loan, Laoutre, Troncquoy, Boux and Burie-Coucelles, this last being on the grounds of Roubaix.

It should be known that the lords of Lannoy initially lived in Lys where they had made build beautiful and full named residence the Court, about the site of the stronghold of Chantraine, today the Barbieux farm, concerning with sorted Lily and the church of the known as place.

Lannoy was among large the Fortified towns of the area.

Today destroyed by the Industrialization, Lannoy closed city, as even left us traces of its glorious and tumultuous past.

The Armorial bearings of the city

September first of the year 1459, the Duke Philippe granted Lannoy, as at a good city, a clean scel, or scel with the causes of the échevinage. The city made engrave on its scel: Sigilum AD caused urbis lanoiensis, one ecu of money with three heads of dogs clabauds of sand. At the end of the 17th century, these armorial bearings were officially recorded in the general armorial of France. A Legend is attached at the origin of these armorial bearings. It is said that one night, the town of Lannoy was about to be surprised by the enemy and that dogs, by their long barkings, giving the awakening, saved the inhabitants of the bag and plundering and that in memory so the city adopted three heads of dogs for emblem.
