Langast

Langast is a common French, located in the department of the Coast-with Armor and the area Brittany.

Geography

History

The name of " Langast" comes from old Breton Lann hermitage, and probably from Gall saint.

L´existence de Langast is proven as of the 10th century. Celts and Romans follow one another on the territory of Langast, leaving some vestiges. The foundation of the church would date from the 6th century, of Gall saint. The parish of Langast, wedged in the évêché of Saint-Brieuc belonged to the Doyenné of concerning Coëtmieux évêché of Fraud and was under the term of Saint Gall. It is under the control of a prior about 1330 and acquires the title of parish in 1452. This one counts six noble houses, during the 15th century.

At the 17th century, Colbert authorizes Langast to organize markets of fabrics and cattle. The commune becomes a prosperous commercial borough then. The election of the first municipality takes place in 1790. Disorders burst between chouans and republicans, and in 1795, a republican mobile column is attacked at the time of a ambush.

At the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, it is most important of the communes of the canton on the commercial plan; it exports several thousands of kilogram of butter in the area of Rennes. In 1859, Langast counts 1512 inhabitants. The moors recover part of the grounds. They are cleared at the 19th century to allow the buckwheat culture.

Civil architecture: castles of Essarts, the Rock (or Rochay) and of Pontgamp.

C´est especially crowned l´architecture of Langast which makes the richness of the inheritance of the commune. L´église Saint-Gall seems oldest of Brittany, since recent discovered frescos of or, which completely modified the chronology of the building, formerly dated from S. Its characteristic resides in masonry in fish-bone. The overall plan, the low part on the low sides and the arcs of the spans go back to original construction. With, the Western frontage is modified with the addition of a bell-tower, restored at the beginning of the 16th century. The sides are elevated at the beginning of the 18th century and their roof are joined together with that of the nave and the external walls, provided with buttresses. Principal curiosities: Gallo-Roman paintings on the central pillars and many paintings, thus qu´un tunnel under the principal furnace bridge leading directly towards the monastery (disappeared); bell-tower-porch, carries southern decorated; baptistry mérovingien, stained glass of, retables of the 18th century, Christ of beam of glory.

The Midsummer's Day vault was set up at the 15th century and is aujourd´hui historic building.

Tourism

For those which are interested in l´architecture, civil or religious: the vault Midsummer's Day (16th century); the castle of Rochay (17th century); the castle of Pontgamp (17th century); the castle of Essarts (15th century).

To also see: the village of Montrel and its restored vault, and vestiges prehistoric and ancient like the menhir of the Jump-Thébault and the mound of Châtelet (or tumulus of the Bump-of-Devil).

Moreover, many hikes at the beginning of Langast were arranged, in particular along the valley of Bound, with the wire of l´eau and often through wood.

Several festivals animate the local life: employers' festival second Sunday of July; local fair first Sunday d´août, you fair the first and fourth Tuesday of May and fourth Tuesday June.

Economy

Langast is a commune with agricultural vocation. On the entire surface of 2044 ha, including 1487 of SAU, one counts 35 exploitations: 25 milk exploitations; 3 exploitations specialized in pigs; some breedings of bovine, ovine, avicolous, cunicole and equine.

24 commercial craftsmen/are installed in the commune.
