Lane-on-Touvre

Lane-on-Touvre is a common French, located in the department of the Charente and the area Poitou-Charentes.

Geography

As its name indicates it, Ruelle is located on the river Touvre, of which it occupies the slopes of Right Bank as well as the northern side heights of Beautiful-Air, on left bank.

History

With the the Middle Ages, parish concerned with the seigniory of Tranchade.

Demography

In 1789, the population was of 1.000 inhabitants; 4.811 in 1946.

The Marquis de Montalembert establishes in 1753 a forging mill with two blast furnaces intended for the manufacture of guns for the Marine of the King. She becomes royal property in 1776 then becomes, in 1782, “royal foundry of the Navy”.

Of 1788 with 1795, the foundry (which becomes “national” after 1792) is deeply altered by the addition of reverberatory furnaces on the model of those of Indret.

In 1803 the foundry becomes a national control. It again is deeply modified in the years 1820: the levels and of Touvre pennent their current configuration then.

In 1916, the guns of 400 mm which crushed the superstructures of the fort of Douaumont, which German had captured, came from Lane.

Personalities related to the commune

  • Marc-Rene de Montalembert, marquis, writer and business men, repurchases in 1750 an old paper mill located on left bank of Touvre as well as a mill at corn located on Right Bank. It establishes there a forging mill intended for the manufacture of guns for the Navy, which will become the royal foundry of Lane. Its bronze bust is visible in the gardens which face the foundry, on the other side of the old Angouleme-Limoges road.
