The landsmål was created by Ivar Aasen in 1848, at the time, it was written landsmaal.
The publisher Det Norske Samlaget which publishes the authors using the landsmål was created in 1868.
The first great writer to use the landsmål is Arne Garborg of which the first book Ein fritenkjar (a free-thinker) date of 1878.
The landsmål was recognized like normalizes written official of the Norwegian on May 12th, 1885 by the Storting, the Norwegian National Assembly. He was recognized like Folkesprog , i.e. like the language of the people. There were consequently two official standards written for Norwegian.
In 1906 the militant linguistic organization Norigs Maalag is founded, of which the goal is to defend and promote the use of the landsmål. It is starting from the reform of 1907 that the landsmaal is written landsmål
It is into 1929 that the term of Nynorsk comes to replace that of landsmål.
